The Future of Work
The future of work as some have mistaken it to be is not college degrees, neither CGPAs nor transcripts. The future of work will be about job skill, and here is why.
Degrees are perfect when you have to showcase what you learned in school. They are the evidence that you spent a period focusing on a course proving how well you were able to learn the theories guiding the course and/or apply those theories in practice in academic settings. However, they are never evidence of how much skill you have gained, and major industries are also starting to realize that.
According to the World Economic Forum, it was discovered that most children enrolled in primary school will eventually get jobs that have not even surfaced into existence yet. That said, most of the degrees college students are striving to bag now, will be of no relevance in a couple of years to come. The solution to this meltdown is to acquire skills.
Major technology companies realizing that degrees are no certification for efficiency have started hiring people who do not have a degree but have an instrumental skill, and productive contribution to make in the companies. Some of these companies include Google, IBM, Apple, and more companies are joining the list.
To be fully functional in these modern times, unorthodox educational options have to be adopted to learn skills. Sites like Coursera or Udemy are great examples of sites to learn highly in-demand skills.
The purpose of this post is not to emphasize that going to college is a waste of time or money. Instead it is pointed at highlighting that the future will not be about degrees. And no school is ever enough to teach you how to be prepared for a future we are also unable to predict. Education is beyond diplomas, it lives on and keeps evolving as the world changes.
